Midsummer is the time I become aware of since I arrive in Europe.
Midsummer in Japan often overlaps the rainy season, so it may not be a good season as it obviously rains a lot and humid. At least we do not feel that summer has arrived. When I was in Australia because of the too strong sunshine I stayed at home. However now midsummer is to me the best season here in Poland. And probably many people feel the same. The daytime is long. It is nice to see the rays of sun shines in gold at even 9pm. My definition of summer has changed. Now I feel it summer between mid-June and July. Also, here in Europe we don’t have hot and humid air, tropical night or the buzz of cicadas. Now, summer has become my favourite season. The temperature of hot days is usually 30 degree or a bit higher. At night the temperature goes down to 15 or 9 degree.
Midsummer passed in the brink but hope you have a look at the collection of the scenery I saw during that time.
Środek lata to czas, którego jestem świadomy, odkąd przybyłem do Europy.
On the first week of June from the Thursday to the weekend, we visited a South Western Polish city, Opole. Opole is located 430km South East from Szczecin. We took a trip to celebrate the birthday of Ajka. Opole is a historical city where there were already residents in the 5th century. Like many other Polish cities, they lost a large part of the city during the war. The city has been largely refurbished. The town hall is a rectangular and flat concrete structure. But at the same time we saw the city takes over the past and its atmosphere. One of the main elements of this city seems to be the water such as Oder River and the canal coming from that. We often saw restaurants and café by the water. There were fountains and flows of the water as well as the illumination them.
Also, the time of our visit coincided with the music festival, so after the sightseeing, we were able to watch it at the public viewing in the town square.
The historic defensive tower (Piast Tower) was unfortunately closed due to the fact that the equipment for the music festival were installed, but instead we could see the tower was wonderfully and unrealistically lit up at night. The night scene of the central market square was worth seeing. In the sky of Europe some of the daylight is left at this time of the year. And the colors of the sky, such as pale blue, cobalt blue, and dark blue, as well as the lights of the square created a wonderful atmosphere.
The highlight on the second day was Museum of Opole Silesia. As I mentioned at the beginning of this episode, ” there were already residents in the 5th century,” the museum was rich in contents such as history, people’s lives, culture, art, and decoration. I was particularly interested in the sections on topography and archaeology. To me it is one of the best parts of traveling to think about the distant past and the character of the region.
On the third day, Saturday, we visited Brzeg, a small city about half an hour away by train. Knowing that there were not too many attractions in Opole, we had scheduled the visit prior to this trip and had been looking forward to the castle. The castle was as nice as I expected. The façade, the furniture, artworks and decorations were great, but the highlight was no doubt the courtyard. The arches, storeys and columns with detailed decorations consisted a wonderful architectural space . I was quite satisfied as I could also purchase the souvenirs. On the way back to the train station of Buzek, we stopped at two churches, at one of which a wedding ceremony was being held under the stained-glass windows.
While we enjoyed the lovely towns and castles, we also encountered the reality which is common in Polish cities. In this small town of Opole, we struggled with the lack of cafes and restaurants, their early closing hours, and very few vegan (i.e., Ajka) restaurants. I found only one souvenir shop in the city center of Opole. I guess Poles don’t really enjoy shopping while traveling. Overall, however, the trip was not bad. In my opinion, it would have been better if the hotel (this time a private room of a hostel) had been better.
Często widzieliśmy restauracje i kawiarnie nad wodą.
Szczególnie zainteresowały mnie sekcje dotyczące topografii i archeologii.
We order some of the vegetables and fruits online from organic farmers.
In February and March we had red Italian blood oranges delivered from Italy every week. Perhaps because we are not too far from Italy and the fruits are delivered fresh, such oranges were available for orders. I have never felt blood oranges were so close to my everyday life as to holding them in the kitchen. After squeezing them, the result was the red juice as seen in the photos at the top.
I met blood oranges, if my memory is correct, around the early 90’s, during which I visited Italian restaurants with my family from time to time. I was amazed to find blood orange juice was completely different from usual orange juice in its flavour, depth, sweetness and taste.
As a result of a series of happenings such as escalation of my English learning, love of fine arts/museums Europe and travelling being put together like pieces of a puzzle, I ended up travelling in Italy. During the 4 years at the university each year I visited England and Italy 3 times. During the 90’s I was obsessed with the Italian painter, Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio and visited Milan, Florence Rome, Vicenza, Naples and Sicily as well. Particularly the trip from Vienna to through Italy to Syracuse will stay in my mind as a memory.
During my visit to Italy, aside from visiting museums, old town and churches/cathedrals, what I always did was buying blood orange juice in a brick pack. You might sometimes not find this juice at a restaurant but I believe you will always find it at a supermarket.
Between 2012 and 2018 I visited Rome, Naples, Venice, Florence, Plato, Siena, Turin and Vicenza. The big cities offer great arts in Italy, but at the same time I became tired of the long queues when waiting for the entries into the facilities, large crowds and poor public safety particularly on the underground trains. So, gradually I shifted my interest to Nordic countries and the Netherlands that offer more relaxing moods. Also I sought the peaceful moments in the Dutch paintings, the beaches of North Sea, the sunsets on the beaches, the scenery and calmness of Finland, and Finnish designs.
However, last year I jointed with Ajka for my first time a tour in Sicily from a Polish company, staying at Sicily’s North Eastern town, Brolo. That was my return to Italy after about 5 years. While having visited tourism cities such as Syracuse, Taormina, Palermo, what impressed me were the beautiful sea of Brolo, the mediterranean flowers, the hills and the blood orange juice we had there as well as Spaghetti with sardine. I felt like I saw a new aspect of Italy.
W latach 90-tych miałam obsesję na punkcie włoskiego malarza Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio i odwiedziłam Mediolan, Florencję, Rzym, Vicenzę, Neapol i Sycylię.
Podczas mojej wizyty we Włoszech, oprócz zwiedzania muzeów, starego miasta i kościołów/katedr, zawsze kupowałem sok z krwistych pomarańczy w opakowaniu w kształcie cegły.
W latach 2012-2018 odwiedziłem Rzym, Neapol, Wenecję, Florencję, Platon, Sienę, Turyn i Vicenzę.
Polish chocolate: The Astonishing taste of Mieszko
Polish chocolate, and discovery of Mieszko
Hello all, In this blog I don’t think I have written much about the foods except the Christmas meals in Poland. However, I have loved chocolate very much since my childhood. Don’t you associate chocolate with Belgium? But you find great chocolate in Poland, too. And also there are local speciality products like plum chocolate. Though the most famous chocolate company is a Wedel with a long history, what I was astonished on the day after I arrived in Poland was not Wedel.
In April 2017, on the day after I arrived in Poland, as Ajka worked on that day I saw around inside the modern opera house of Szczecin, then I sat at a café there and ordered a coffee. Also I had something to eat. What I found was Hazelnut Chocolate from Mieszko. The deep taste of cocoa and the flavour of hazelnut gave a clearly different impression from average chocolate. I even kept the blue-green wrapping foil of the chocolate inside the travel diary and took it back to Australia.
We visited Wloclaw at the end of 2017. we were invited by the friends of Ajka to the NYE party. I received a box of Mieszko chocolate.
Rediscovery of Mieszko
Since then, 6 years and a half had passed. In the meantime, the parents of Ajka, and her friends gave me chocolate as presents and I also purchased some. However that hazelnut chocolate I had for the first time was hard to find. Other varieties of Mieszko were tasty but not as much as they astonished me.
October last year, I spotted Mieszko chocolate balls with orange liqueur flavour wrapped in orange foils at a supermarket. So, I decided to try them. It was and still is hard to describe the taste of marriage between the bitterness of both cocoa and orange. It may be exaggerating to say, but let me say it…”the deepness of this chocolate ball makes me feel sinking into somewhere deep in the water”!
This chocolate is hard outside and liquid inside, and the texture of the liquid part is thick and melty. May be it goes a little beyond that hazelnut chocolate. In general other liquor chocolate leaks from the inside but I have never seen any of those chocolate balls leaking. And recently liquor chocolate from Mieszko in general don’t leak either.
For Valentine’s Day, I received a bag of this chocolate balls from Ajka’s mother. So, I can enjoy this for a while every week. I have a relaxing time twice a week with sweets, candles and coffee.
Sometime in the future I will introduce some other Polish chocolate sweets. But Mieszko is my best chocolate in Poland.
Następnie poszukałem czegoś do jedzenia. Głęboki smak kakao i orzechów laskowych sprawiał wyraźnie inne wrażenie niż wiele innych czekoladowych słodyczy, jakie kiedykolwiek jadłem. Zachowałem nawet niebiesko-zieloną folię z opakowania czekolady w dzienniku podróży i zabrałem ją z powrotem do Australii.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Ponowne odkrycie Mieszko Od tego czasu minęło 6 i pół roku. W międzyczasie rodzice Ajki i jej przyjaciele dali mi czekoladę w prezencie, a ja też trochę kupiłem.
Trudno opisać smak mariażu goryczy kakao i pomarańczy.
As it turned February it is steadily becoming warmer and there have been days around 10 degree. At least recently I feel something has changed much from the cold and frosty January. Probably spring is approaching. However, it still rains most of the days, though the sunset occurs at 5:30pm, much later than mid-winter (at around 4pm!!) .
By the way, what we can see when spring is around the corner are snowdrops. Many of you living in Europe may know these flowers. There is a place I visit to see them every year. That is Gubałówka, an area 8.5km to the north from Szczecin’s city center. There are a hill and forests apart from the skating rink we visit during winter. Though I called it “hill”, once we enter the vast forest, it is as if we were walking along a mountain path. Aijka says Gubałówka is colder than other areas.
We can see snowdrops not visiting Gubałówka, but they look mysterious when we spot them in the middle of the withered leaves in the forest. As you can see, I could barely find the small buds. They are still buds perhaps because of the coldness in the forest, and because of the darkness and weak sunshine among in the forest.
In anyways, It looks like we are coming to the end of winter but spring is way ahead.
It can be colder than usual here in Szczecin. Since the mid-December the number of days below zero has increased. And I have an impression we have more snowy days than usual this year.
Szczecin is relatively warmer in Poland. By the way it is -6 in Warsaw at 2 am on 17th January 2024 while it is -1 here. Szczecin is said to have a similar climate to England and Denmark but at least it is colder than London with more sub-zero days and snowy days.
Last week we had days with high humidity and temperatures below minus 5. Our street “Denmark Street” (in Polish, Ulica Dunska) is a tree-lined, so once the trees have frost it will look like the photos blow. I went out at 1:30 am in the morning to enjoy this unreal scenery
Two days later I took some time in the early afternoon to a nearby park. Both the trees and the ground were white everywhere.
Such snowy and white winter scenery lifts up my mood and I wish it snow even more. Frost is very mysterious and surreal and such events occur only a few times a year in Szczecin. So, unlike Ajika I feel like celebrating. It happened in my childhood that the soil hardened by the frost. But “white” trees with the frost is what I have had only in Poland so, that is exciting to me. Ajika was till recently looking for a flight to escape to Spain. She actually hates the cold wind, low temperature and snow of winter. What do you think of snow, frost and winter?
In anyways hope you have a good beginning of the year.
W zeszłym tygodniu mieliśmy dni z dużą wilgotnością i temperaturami poniżej minus 5.
Taka śnieżna i biała zimowa sceneria poprawia mi humor i jeszcze bardziej życzę śniegu. Zatem w przeciwieństwie do Ajiki mam ochotę świętować. Ajika do niedawna szukała lotu do Hiszpanii. Tak naprawdę nienawidzi zimnego wiatru, niskiej temperatury i śniegu w zimie. Co sądzisz o śniegu, mrozie i zimie?
W każdym razie mam nadzieję, że masz dobry początek roku.
Hope you have been fine. How are you spending the festive season? As I thought of writing about winter in Poland, I just checked when winter begins. Unexpectedly what I found was that winter begins at winter solstice (December 21 or 22) . However as here in Poland it becomes colder and the daytime becomes shorter and darker, so I feel maybe we could call November early winter. And the first snow in Szczecin falls in November each year.
On the first of November is the Polish annual event of All Saint’s Day on which they visit a cemetery. For this event Poles visit a cemetary before that day to clean their graves to cause traffice jams. Such a matter is what I have never heard of my home country Japan. I can feel the difference between Japan and Poland in their approach to ancester, the deseased, and cemetery. In Japan, visits to a cemetery is not perceived as as such a big event. Probably the Japanese might visit their family’s graves, clean and provide the offerings on one visit just as they need. And in Japan I don’t think cemetery is a place where people enjoy visiting. On All Saint’s day in Poland we see gougerous candle decorations at the cemetery and also see some playing the music there. And it seems they meet their friends and family taking advantage of this event.
The event at the end of Chrismas is of course Christmas. The atmosphere of the city is very different between the two countries. Probably many of the Poles prepare for the Chrismas dinner taking time and effort. Except rich people they have Chrismast dinner at home and don’t take away or eat out. 23rd of December is a busy day in Poland and at around 7pm the city becomes very quiet. Obviously they are unlikely to have a party in the city, so they may not have the idea of gathering attracting crowds by illuminating/decorating gorgeiously. In fact the illumination makes news in Japan every year but they say in Poland such things don’t happen here. But for a photographer it is certainly great that the places are not too crowded. I feel previledged that I can take photos avoiding crowds in Szczecin’s illumination spots as some of them are very beautiful. And the Chrismas Market can be a bit of entertainment spot for shopping and to enjoy the mood of Chrismas.
Hope you enjoy some photos taken between the early November and Christmas.
Czuję różnicę w stosunku do Polski w podejściu do przodków, zmarłego i cmentarza.
Prawdopodobnie wielu Polaków przygotowania do świątecznego obiadu wymagają czasu i wysiłku.
